Choosing a therapist

It’s easy to find a counsellor or psychotherapist but perhaps more difficult to know if you’ve found one that is right for you.

There are a number of questions you can consider to help you choose.

  • A reputable therapist will have undergone extensive training, be registered or accredited with one of the main UK governing bodies (BABCP, EMDR Association UK and Ireland, BACP BPS, UKCP, AREBT) and will have acquired extensive clinical experience. This ensures that they are working to an agreed standard of conduct, performance, ethics, and training

This can vary greatly and will usually reflect a therapist’s qualifications and experience.

This is entirely up to you, although we would recommend weekly or fortnightly at least for the first few sessions.

If you want to attend as a couple you will need to check that your therapist specialises in couple work.

If you work full time you may need to check that your therapist offers evening and/or weekend appointments.

Some therapists offer Skype or Phone sessions.
